Part I: Charting a New Course; January 1953 to April 1953
Chapter 1: Developing a spirit of teamwork

Dear Charlie: Thank you very much for your note.1 Your idea has the virtue of being a fresh and appealing approach to the problem. I know that some dramatic act is necessary, and I am having Foster Dulles study the matter at once. It may take us some time, but I will try to let you know the outcome.2

In any event, thanks. You always give me a lift because you are always looking forward. Sincerely

1 In a five-page, undated letter Wilson told of speaking with Soviet U.N. delegate Yakov Alexandrovitch Malik at a gathering arranged by American Quakers, apparently in New York City. Wilson had concluded "that the Russians and their Satellites fear the truth reaching the masses of their people." Wilson proposed that Eisenhower broadcast a one-hour peace message to all peoples of the world, including those behind the Iron Curtain. "By vigorous and intelligent buildup the Peace-Cast can be made the most important, exciting and dramatic event in history," Wilson exclaimed.

2 Eisenhower initialed Wilson's letter and ordered it filed. In August 1954, in an address to the World Council of Churches, Eisenhower would call for a "World Day of Prayer for Peace" (see Whitman to Minnich, Aug. 19, 1954; Minnich or Adams to Eisenhower, Aug. 17 [?], 1954, AWF/A; and no. 1030). For developments see no. 1356.
