Dear Bernie: Thank you for sending me the memorandum you wrote in connection with the movement by the Russians to take some action in gold--and also for the copy of your memorandum of July 31, 1939.1 I shall read both documents carefully.

Your telegram of yesterday has also reached my desk, one of the very few messages I received on Armistice Day.2 For your thoughtfulness I am exceedingly grateful.

Tom Stephens is going to get in touch with you after we return from Canada to see if you are free for a lunch date some time in the near future.3

With warm regard, Sincerely

1 Prompted by newspaper reports that the Soviet Union was selling gold, Baruch had advised that this action "be followed most carefully" as an indicator of "what the Kremlin is up to" (Baruch to Eisenhower, Nov. 10, 1953, AWF/A; New York Times, Nov. 9, 1953). Baruch's 1939 memorandum to President Roosevelt had warned of the support the United States was giving totalitarian states, particularly Japan, by buying their gold (AWF/A).

2 Baruch had cabled his "deep gratitude" to Eisenhower, his colleagues, and all who had fought in both world wars (Nov. 11, 1953, ibid.).

3 Baruch would lunch with Eisenhower on November 23 and later, in a letter of appreciation, would compliment the President on his grasp of the problems confronting the nation (Baruch to Eisenhower, Nov. 23, 1953, AWF/A).
