Your Eminence:1 I have just written to the Chancellor to assure him once again of the great sense of distinction I feel in the honor conferred upon me today by the Catholic University of America.2 Such a note, however, cannot possibly express the feeling of personal satisfaction I derived from my meeting with you. I wonder whether it is disrespectful to the formal speakers for me to say that your pungent and amusing remarks during the proceedings attracted my attention far more than did some of the discourses which I am sure were both learned and instructive.
It was a very noteworthy gathering and a memorable occasion; but I shall certainly remember the longest my all too brief conversation with you.3
Incidentally, when I do get to play golf here in Washington, I do so at Burning Tree, where John Sullivan is now President.4 If at any time you are here and do me the honor of informing me of your presence, I would be more than delighted to arrange a game. Even if you cannot do so, I assure you that I shall look foward to playing on your Detroit course one of these fine days, even though I know that such a hope is--to put it mildly--a faint and feeble one.
With personal regard, Sincerely and respectfully
