Part IV: "Pushing ahead along the broad center"; December 1953 to March 1954
Chapter 8: A world "racing toward catastrophe"

I have just learned that the "Meat Institute" just sent us four big steaks.1 They are not frozen and have been put in the cold room. They should be used within a week.

If you plan on getting up toward the latter part of the week, I suggest either a fairly good sized dinner with some of your friends before we go away for Christmas, or maybe two very small occasions.2

1 The American Meat Institute (AMI) had sent the steaks. The President occasionally sent memorandums to Mrs. Eisenhower regarding social arrangements; see, for example, no. 364.

2 Mrs. Eisenhower had been ill with the flu since Thanksgiving and had cancelled all appointments since December 8 (New York Times, Dec. 9, 13, 14, 1953). According to the President's daily appointments, the Eisenhowers would not have dinner with friends before Christmas. They would spend the holiday in Augusta, Georgia, with their son, John, and his family (see President's daily appointments, Dec. 25, 1953-Jan. 3, 1954).
