Part IV: "Pushing ahead along the broad center"; December 1953 to March 1954
Chapter 8: A world "racing toward catastrophe"

Dear Arthur: Your report on Perle Mesta does amaze me.1 She has always, on the surface, been most devoted to Mamie. We knew her well while we were in Europe, and she not only urged me to run for the Presidency but frequently offered to help financially in a very substantial way.

However, nothing that occurs in politics can longer astound me.

Thanks for writing. As ever

1 On December 10 Arthur had written that when Mesta was in Kansas City during the campaign "she was about as nasty in her remarks as I have heard from any woman," and "she was not very complimentary about you." For background on the Eisenhowers' relationship with Mesta see Eisenhower Papers, vols. X-XIII. Arthur also said he had heard that Mesta, former Ambassador to Luxembourg, was returning to Washington, D.C. Mesta had resigned her ambassadorship in April (for background see no. 145).
