Chapter 8: A world "racing toward catastrophe"

Memorandum for the Secretary of Health, Welfare and Education: The following suggestion comes to me from Sinclair Weeks and was originally made by a friend of his:1

"The newspapers continue to feature among the persons invited to White House gatherings top business leaders, and the impression has gotten around that the administration is partial to such leaders and that others are not welcome, except possibly a few educators. There is a very large number of social service workers who would like to be supporters of the President. They believe he is an idealist, and I think it would be well for him to show himself to them. A conference on juvenile delinquency, or the prevention of slum districts, or the treatment of the aged, to which a large number of social service workers are invited would go a long way to develop favorable sentiment. The suggestion was passed on to me by one of our outstanding social service workers in this community with the request that I pass it on to Washington. I think well of it, and I think it would pay good dividends."

Have you considered any large-scale conference such as is suggested here? The idea does seem to have merit.

Another thought occurs to me. I might be able to include a few of the top social workers of the country in the occasional stag dinners that I give. Although the lists for the balance of the year are about completed, I'd like to have whatever recommendations you might want to make. Masculine, of course!2

1 Secretary of Commerce Weeks's memo of January 4 addressed to Sherman Adams is in AWF/A, Weeks Corr.

2 Hobby may have responded to the suggestion in person at the January 15 Cabinet meeting, but there is no reply in EM.
