To John Sheldon Doud Eisenhower
Series: EM, AWF, Drafts Series

The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XV - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part IV: "Pushing ahead along the broad center"; December 1953 to March 1954
Chapter 9: Fending off "the reactionary fringe"

Dear John: It just now occurred to me that Valentine's Day and Easter will soon be crowding up on you. If you pursue the habits of your maternal forebears there will be decorations for the house and presents for all! The attached (procured from one of the world's two best secretaries) is unrestricted; it is for anything from golf balls to new shoes for the youngsters or flowers for Barbie.1

Love to all the family. As ever

1 The gift, a check for $50, represented "bridge winnings" (Ann Whitman memorandum, Feb. 1, 1954, AWF/AWD; see also Donovan, Confidential Secretary, p. 57). The President frequently sent "winnings" to his son and daughter-in-law (see Galambos, NATO and the Campaign of 1952, no. 529). Eisenhower had crossed out the first two paragraphs and most of the third paragraph in the original draft and rewrote this letter in longhand.
