The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XV - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part V: Maintaining "a united defense"; April 1954 to August 1954
Chapter 10: Losing the war "they could not win"

Dear Winston: Of course you will be welcome.1 I agree with you that it is high time that we make certain of our common understanding of current and impending events that affect both our countries intimately.2 I am temporarily out of Washington but will be back there Monday, at which time I shall cable you again as to exact dates.3 With warm regard

1 Churchill had written that he understood Eisenhower would be in Washington between May 20 and 24 and would "very much like to have some talks" with him (Apr. 22, 1954, AWF/I: Churchill). "We shall know more than we know now about several things--mostly tiresome."

2 See no. 816 for Eisenhower's previous correspondence with Churchill regarding the situation in Indochina and the forthcoming Geneva Conference. The recent U.S. hydrogen bomb tests in the Pacific had also concerned the Prime Minister (see nos. 805 and 812).

3 Eisenhower wrote at the bottom of this cable, "Phone Bedell to make sure Dulles has a copy of this. I think I gave him an erroneous impression." See the preceding document for the President's message to Dulles and no. 842 for his brief trips to New York and Kentucky. For developments see no. 844.
