Part V: Maintaining "a united defense"; April 1954 to August 1954
Chapter 10: Losing the war "they could not win"

Dear Harry: As I have stated time and again, most recently yesterday in my press conference, I agree completely with your hope that the McCarthy-Army hearings be brought speedily and effectively to an end.1 The Senate has sought means to bring this about; so far, unhappily, they have been unsuccessful.2

With warm regard, As ever

1 General Mills board chairman Bullis had written on May 4 that at recent business meetings nationwide he had "found no one who was not utterly disgusted with the McCarthy-Army hearings" (AWF/N). It was the "unanimous opinion and hope" of the business community, he said, that the hearings be "brought speedily to an end."

Bullis had sent his letter to the President by way of presidential appointments secretary Thomas E. Stephens. Calling the investigation "disgraceful," Bullis told Stephens that businessmen were "mobilizing against McCarthy," although many did not have the "courage to express their opinions publicly" (ibid., May 4, 1954).

At news conferences in the last two weeks, Eisenhower had repeatedly said that he hoped the Army-McCarthy inquiry would conclude quickly. See Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1954, pp. 452-53, 438; and New York Times, April 30, May 6, 1954.
