Dear David:1 Herewith the book of which I spoke to you, entitled "The Secret Formulas and Techniques of the Masters."2 Keep it as long as you want, although eventually I should like to have it back merely because I am intrigued by certain parts of it.

Thank you once again for your helpfulness in furnishing pictures for my office.

With warm regard, Sincerely

1 Finley (LL.B. George Washington Law School 1913) was the director of the National Gallery of Art. Recently the President had written to the National Gallery to inquire about techniques to preserve paintings (see New York Times, May 29, 1954).

2 The book (New York, 1948) was written by Jacques Maroger, former technical director of the laboratory of the Louvre Museum and president of the Restorers of France. For developments see no. 1208.
