Part V: Maintaining "a united defense"; April 1954 to August 1954
Chapter 10: Losing the war "they could not win"

Dear Winston: I shall be more than happy if Anthony also will be my guest at the White House during your stay there.1 This should provide maximum convenience for you both. Won't you please inform him as soon as possible that I should be pleased and complimented by his acceptance?2

I shall wait to hear from you with regard to the announcement. I agree that there is no hurry about it.3

With warm regard, As ever

1 For background on Churchill's visit to Washington and Eisenhower's invitation to Eden see no. 878. Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles had discussed having Eden stay at the White House, and although Dulles showed concern for the precedent set by such an invitation, Eisenhower said that they were "two old war friends," and he did not see "how there could be any objection" (Telephone conversation, May 26, 1954, Dulles Papers, Telephone Conversations).

2 "I shall be happy to come and it will be grand to see you again," Eden would respond (May 28, 1954, AWF/I: Churchill).

3 Churchill had written that he and Eden thought the announcement of the meeting could be postponed for ten days; Eisenhower and Dulles had agreed (May 26, 1954, ibid.; Telephone conversation, Eisenhower and Dulles, May 26, 1954, Dulles Papers, Telephone Conversations). For developments see nos. 930 and 936.
