Part V: Maintaining "a united defense"; April 1954 to August 1954
Chapter 11: The "men in the Kremlin are not to be trusted"

Dear Jinx:1 I have just learned that you have accepted Mr. Whitney's invitation to serve as Chairman of the Women's Division of the United Republican Finance Committee for New York.2 I am delighted to know of your willingness to help in such an important assignment.

As you know, I feel deeply indebted to the millions of women who have done so much to help this Administration in its purpose of making America strong and secure at home and abroad. While we have made much progress in the past eighteen months, the job is far from complete. We must do again in 1954 what we did in 1952--and we must do more.3 I know that Republican women joined this crusade, as all of us did, for the duration.

With best wishes, Sincerely

2 John Hay "Jock" Whitney, New York investment banker and chairman of that state's United Republican Finance Committee, had asked the radio and television personality to accept the position. She would organize committees of women to raise $250,000 to help finance Republican campaigns in the fall (New York Times, Feb. 5, July 7, 1954).
