Part V: Maintaining "a united defense"; April 1954 to August 1954
Chapter 11: The "men in the Kremlin are not to be trusted"

Dear Cliff: I'm glad you reminded me about sending a note to Mrs. Grantland Rice; I should have thought of it myself. I'll send one off today.1

The Paris Herald has advanced the anticipated time of our departure for Denver. I am tentatively planning on the 15th or 16th, but since I am supposed to be in Illinois on the 19th I may postpone the hegira until that day and do the Illinois business on the way out.2 I've had in the back of my mind a sort of an "Augusta National" weekend out in Denver, and I've mentioned it to Pete Jones.3 Originally I thought we might make it a long weekend and try to work in an overnight trip up to Fraser. At the moment I'm waiting for Aksel to let me know what weekend in September would be the best--I have available the 3rd to 6th, 10th to 13th, and the 17th to the 20th.4

When I spoke to Pete about it, I suggested he and Nettie, Slats and Priscilla, and you and Bill come out. Since then I've thought that it might be nice to include Barry Leithead and his wife, Freeman Gosden, and perhaps Bob and Nell Woodruff (though he doesn't play bridge). Do you think we should try to have all these people on one weekend, or would the party be unwieldy?5

Let me know what you think of all this, and I'll try to work out plans accordingly. If we do go to Fraser, we'll have to coordinate pretty much with Aksel.

Incidentally, I can't plan anything for the weekend of August 29th, because unfortunately I am committed to be back in Washington to address the American Legion Convention.6

I hope you are having a good trip--and I shall eagerly await word from you as to what plans we should make.7

With warm regard, As ever

1 Roberts had written from Switzerland (for background see no. 935) on July 17 to suggest that Eisenhower send his condolences to Mrs. Rice, the former Katherine Hollis (AWF/N: Augusta). Grantland Rice (B.A. Vanderbilt University 1901), well-known for his syndicated sports column, The Sportlight, and his books on golf, had died on July 13 (New York Times, July 14, 15, 1954). Rice had been one of the original founders of the Augusta National Golf Club. "You are one of the beneficiaries of Grant's help to the Augusta National," Roberts had written. We have been unable to find Eisenhower's letter to Mrs. Rice in AWF.

2 Roberts had read that the Eisenhowers would leave for Denver on August 1. As it turned out Eisenhower would fly to Illinois on August 19, return to the White House that evening, and leave for Denver on August 21 (see the President's daily appointments; on the Eisenhowers' vacation see no. 888).

3 Eisenhower probably had mentioned this plan to William Alton ("Pete") Jones while they vacationed at Camp David the weekend of July 4 (see no. 960). Eisenhower's golf friends frequently joined him for vacations at Augusta National (see, for example, no. 1133).

4 For background see no. 961. Eisenhower's July 20 letter to Nielsen and Nielsen's July 22 reply are in AWF/N. The President would visit Aksel Nielsen's ranch in Fraser, Colorado, on August 31, September 1, 2, and 15-20 (see President's daily appointments). For developments see no. 1033.

5 These were the W. Alton Joneses, the Ellis D. Slaters, Roberts, William E. Robinson, the Barry T. Leitheads, Freeman F. Gosden, and the Robert W. Woodruffs. For developments see no. 1033.

6 The President would board the presidential plane, Columbine, for Washington, D.C., on the evening of August 29. The following morning he would address the American Legion Convention, and later that day he would travel to Des Moines, Iowa, to address 25,000 people at the centennial of the Iowa State Fair (see no. 1011, and New York Times, Aug. 30, 31, 1954).

7 In a July 29 update to Roberts, Eisenhower would report that he had invited Robinson, Jones, Slater, Woodruff, Gosden, and Leithead to Denver from September 8 to 12 (AWF/N; see also Eisenhower to Swan, July 22, 1954; Eisenhower to Jones, July 29, 1954; and Eisenhower to Woodruff, July 29, 1954, all in ibid.). For developments see no. 1033.
