To Benjamin Franklin Caffey, Jr.
Series: EM, AWF, Name Series

The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XV - The Presidency: The Middle Way
Part V: Maintaining "a united defense"; April 1954 to August 1954
Chapter 11: The "men in the Kremlin are not to be trusted"

Dear Frank: I was interested in your "gripe."1 Can you send me any documentation of your idea that the Communist way of life is being extolled at the expense of the American system? I have been unaware of this sort of thing.2

Love to Louise,3 and all the best to yourself. As ever

1 Caffey had written on July 22 (AWF/N) of his frustration regarding media reports on Russia. "These `Prophets of Doom'" are telling Americans that "everything the Commies do or have is better than we do or have. Damn it all," he wrote, "a Russian can wear just one pair of pants like the rest of us. It is serious--in fact, almost treasonable for these monkeys to hammer our people day in and day out with our inferiority."

2 We have been unable to find further correspondence on this subject in EM.

3 Caffey's wife, the former Louise Battle.
