Chapter 15: "Debate is the breath of life"

Dear George: The best evidence that I had a restful and beneficial few days at Milestone is my bulging waistline; I find to my dismay that I gained six pounds in four days.1 The problem of getting back into my clothes is just an additional one that I must now take on--possibly it will help take my mind off some of the others that are even more disagreeable.

Every time I think of that Friday evening when you had to dash out suddenly to the scene of Pam’s accident, I am reminded again to thank the Good Lord for her miraculous escape. Though, on Sunday, she said that she was discovering bruises that on Friday evening she did not know were there, so far as looks were concerned she was still her charming and cheerful self.

I am sending a note to Mrs. Hasty to thank her for the camellias because I am afraid that in Mamie’s rush of packing, she may have no time for correspondence.2 I think they are as beautiful as any I have ever seen and I am deeply grateful for her thoughtfulness.

I do hope that Murphy’s box camera pictures of Inaugural Day and me come out well.3 I am anxious to have a couple.

Give my greetings to Brownie, Murphy, Inaugural Day, and all the latter’s associates in the barn.4

The trip back was uneventful. It was quite cloudy and we flew at seventeen thousand feet, but we had no such experience as we did last Wednesday. Landing was normal and we arrived back at the White House about 6:45.5

Thanks again for a wonderful time. Visits to Milestone are always an event to remember with the keenest of pleasure.6

Give my love to Pam and, of course, all the best to yourself. As ever

1 The President had visited former Budget Director Humphrey's Milestone Plantation in Thomasville, Georgia, February 4 - 8 (see the preceding document and New York Times, Feb. 5, 6, 8, 9, 1959).

2 Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Hasty probably worked for the Humphreys. Eisenhower's letter to Mrs. Hasty (Feb. 9) is in AWF/D. On the First Lady's vacation at the Maine Chance resort in Phoenix see no. 1009.

3 Murphy also probably worked for Humphrey. Inaugural Day was undoubtedly an animal living on Humphrey's farm.

4 Brownie probably worked for Humphrey as well.

5 On the flight to Thomasville see the preceding document. On the return flight to Washington see Ann Whitman memorandum, February 9, 1959, AWF/AWD.

6 On Eisenhower's midwinter trips to Humphrey's plantation see nos. 131 and 578.
