Chapter 15: "Debate is the breath of life"

Dear George: If you could show me any way to make the journey between your particular paradise and Washington, D.C., in less than three hours, I would be delighted to accept your invitation.1 Even for you I fear that such a feat is impossible. However, I do send you my congratulations on losing eight pounds, which measure, I hope, is down from the fairly respectable 236 with which you left here, rather than the top level of 242!2

If you are doing that well regularly, it is my advice that you stay right there and continue to play golf for the next three months.

Incidentally, if you want any more ham--or a shoulder and some bacon--please send me word and I will have it in the mail.3

Please convey my adoring admiration to that angel who has found it possible to live with so much of you for so long.

With all the best, As ever

P.S. If Sid is there remember me to him kindly.4

1 This letter may have been misdated. On February 13 Allen would wire Presidential Secretary Ann Whitman to invite the President to his home in LaQuinta, California, where there were "eight golf courses within ten miles" (AWF/A).

2 On Eisenhower's efforts to reduce the girth of Allen see no. 1049. Allen would report that he was dieting "religiously."

3 The President had sent a ham to Allen in late January (see no. 1049).

4 The reference was to Fort Worth oil magnate Sidney Williams Richardson.
