Chapter 17: "Sources of division" among allies

Dear Ed: I understand your feeling about cost of the cemetery fence, but frankly I do not have any hopes of getting Harry Darby to accept payment for the construction cost.1 He has steadfastly refused to answer my queries on the subject; he is a very good friend of mine and I believe that to press him further would embarrass and perhaps offend him.2

You have no obligation to write Harry, of course. I have adequately expressed the thanks of all the brothers.

With warm regard, As ever

1 Edgar had written on June 23 that he was pleased with the fence constructed around the gravesite of their parents (for background see nos. 898 and 911). He did not know, however, how to get in touch with former U.S. Senator Darby, who had paid for the project.

2 On the President's attempt to reimburse Darby see no. 1159; see also no. 899.
