Chapter 19: Khrushchev in America

Dear Leonard: As quickly as I came back from the hospital I meant to send you a package of the new "Super" Gillette blades. I am now experimenting with my own. I find that on the first day the shave is absolutely perfect. The second day there is little difference. On the third I begin to notice some deterioration, but even so I think the shave is still better than it was with the old "Blue Blades." Tentatively I am adopting the schedule of throwing the blade away after three days.1

I shall be interested to see what you conclude after using this package.2

Give my best to Sara Hill.3 As ever

1 On September 9 Heaton, Commanding General of Walter Reed Army Hospital, had been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and had been appointed Surgeon General of the U.S. Army (New York Times, Sept. 10, 1959). On the evening of October 29 the President had entered his suite at Walter Reed for his annual exam and had dined with Heaton in the hospital dining room. The following morning Eisenhower had undergone a complete physical examination. The President had received sample packages of the improved razor blades from an executive of the Gillette Safety Razor Company (see Eisenhower to Brownlee, Nov. 5, 1959, AWF/D).

2 Although we have been unable to find a reply from Heaton, Eisenhower received favorable reports from the other friends to whom he had given the samples (ibid.).

3 The former Sara Hill Richardson was Heaton’s wife.
