Chapter 20: "No substitute for personal contact"

Dear Queen Elizabeth: I am truly grateful for your kindness in sending me the recipe for the scones.1 I hope we may soon use it.

You will understand my rather woeful ignorance of culinary practices when I tell you that I did not recognize the term "caster" as a type of sugar.2 But when I called the British Embassy for help, the problem was promptly solved for me.

May I ask that you convey warm greetings from my wife and me to Prince Philip, to the Queen Mother, to Princess Margaret and to your children? Quite naturally we both send you our affectionate regard as well as our prayers that all will be well with you in the arrival of the expected addition to your charming family.3

With great respect and high esteem, Sincerely

1 Queen Elizabeth had sent the recipe with a longhand note on January 24 (AWF/I: Queen Elizabeth). She recently had remembered that she had promised the recipe to the President when he visited her in Scotland (on the visit see no. 1285).

2 The recipe had called for four tablespoons of caster sugar. Caster sugar is sugar dispensed from a container with a perforated top.

3 The Queen would give birth to a son, Andrew Albert Christian Edward, on February 19 at Buckingham Palace (New York Times, Feb. 20, Mar. 23, 1960; London Times, Feb. 20, 1960). Eisenhower would send an official congratulatory message to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on February 19 (Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1960 - 61, p. 202; see also the draft letter to Queen Elizabeth [Feb. 16, 1960] in AWF/D).
