Part IX: Shattered Dreams; March 1960 to July 1960
Chapter 21: "Progress in a knotty problem"

Dear Dave:1 At the conclusion of my broadcast the other evening, I found that I had allowed myself to run one minute over the time allotted to me. Although I usually keep a watch at hand to pace myself, I had neglected to do so and had no idea that I was exceeding the fifteen minutes you had so kindly given me.2

The offense will not be repeated!3

With warm regard, As ever

1 Sarnoff, chairman of the board of the Radio Corporation of America since 1947, had served as Eisenhower’s communications consultant during the Normandy invasion in 1944 (for background see Eisenhower Papers, vols. X - XVII).

2 On March 8, in a radio and television broadcast, the President had summarized his impressions gathered during a ten-day tour of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay (for background see no. 1403). In his address Eisenhower had declared that U.S.-Latin American relations had "reached an all time high." He urged his fellow citizens to become better informed regarding Latin Americans, their institutions and traditions, and he advocated closer ties between North and South Americans (see Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1960 - 61, pp. 282 - 87, and New York Times, Mar. 9, 1960).

3 Sarnoff would reply (Mar. 17, same file as document) that the additional time had caused no difficulty in the network operations. The National Broadcasting Company had scheduled fifteen minutes of news comment directly following Eisenhower’s address so the extra minute "was not even noticeable."

On this same day the President would send similar letters to the chairmen of the boards of the Columbia Broadcasting System, Mutual Broadcasting System and the American Broadcasting System (see Eisenhower to Stanton; Eisenhower to Hurleigh; Eisenhower to Goldenson, and Goldenson to Eisenhower, both Mar. 18, and Hurleigh to Eisenhower, Mar. 24, all in same file as document).
