Dear Allan: Thank you very much for your letter. I am most deeply appreciative of your offer to let us keep Ankonian for a while.1 I should really like to have every good heifer on the place have at least one by him.
This spring Mamie and I are planning to spend quite a few week ends at the farm. If things work out that way, possibly we can have both of you down for a couple of days. We could then go over the herd very thoroughly.2
You might be interested in some late developments. First a couple of good Republicans over the country have each transferred a young heifer to me, to be delivered in the spring.3 One is a Black Beauty Zara heifer, sired by a Bandolier bred bull.
Another is one named "Mamie of Shadow Isle."4 One of her grandsires is your Eileenmere 1032. Different animals in her background are a Barbarian of Rosemere, a Barbara Corneller and Ankonian 3216. She is a Blackcap heifer.
Recently there arrived at my farm a Scottish heifer, bred to a Scottish bull.5 Since arrival she has dropped a bull calf. Both the dam and the calf look fine but I am not sufficiently well acquainted with the Scottish families and blood lines to make it worthwhile to try to tell you anything about her.
I am buying two heifers soon.6 One is a granddaughter of Homeplace Eileenmere 999 - 35; the other is a daughter of Bardoliermere H 55. He is a full brother to the 1953 International Champion. Both of these will be bred to O. Bardoliermere 32nd, a brother of the bull who sired both the International male and female champions this year.
We got rid of the Bandolier bull, and since he was in the name of the "Eisenhower Farms" I just sent him to the meat market.7 I wouldn't take any chance of his carrying my name in some consignment sale.
I have not checked up to find out when we will have some of the Ankonian calves on the ground. I will ask Art Nevins to let you know. I have not yet had his report on your sale, except an indirect word that he said it was a "huge success."8 More power to you.
Please remember me kindly to Mr. Leachman,9 and, of course, my greetings to your lovely bride.
With warm regard, Sincerely
