The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XXI - The Presidency: Keeping the Peace
Part X: Ending an Era; August 1960 to January 1961
Chapter 24: "We missed by such a narrow margin"

Dear Milton: Mamie Moore has just told me that she is going to enter Mary Washington College at Fredericksburg, if accepted. Obviously we don’t need to bother our heads any more about this.1

I do hope you are improving. It must be difficult to hold on to any shred of good disposition under such circumstances.2 As ever

1 Miss Moore was the daughter of the First Lady’s sister, Mabel Moore. The President and his brother had been in contact about her college prospects (Ann Whitman memorandum, Sept. 19, 1960, AWF/AWD). On Eisenhower’s relationship with his goddaughter see no. 1595.

2 Milton Eisenhower had suffered a back injury in mid- September (Milton Eisenhower to Eisenhower, Oct. 18, 1960, WHCF/OF 103-A-2). For developments see no. 1692.
