The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XXI - The Presidency: Keeping the Peace
Part X: Ending an Era; August 1960 to January 1961
Chapter 24: "We missed by such a narrow margin"

Dear Dick: The first four ballots cast at 7:00 A.M. this morning in my precinct in Gettysburgh were for Nixon and Lodge.1 If this marks a trend, you will win in a walk. Good luck.2 As ever

1 The President had been the first voter to appear at the Barley Firehouse in Cumberland Township, Pennsylvania, the polling place near his Gettysburg farm. He and Lieutenant Colonel John S. D. Eisenhower, who was registered in the same precinct (see no. 1238), had traveled by helicopter from Washington (New York Times, Nov. 9, 1960).

2 For developments see no. 1699.
