Chapter 24: "We missed by such a narrow margin"

Dear Milton: I have your note about a "family reunion" next summer, possibly in Wisconsin. I’d like to think about it for awhile and talk it all over with you when next I see you.1 Incidentally, do you envision a stag affair or one where wives (and perhaps children--in your case, of course, Ruth) are included?

Ann tells me that you have not definitely decided against coming to one of the dinners we are having in a few weeks.2 I take it this means you are really on the mend, for which I am most grateful.3

With warm regard,4 As ever

1 Milton Eisenhower had written November 4 that he and Edgar Eisenhower had discussed having a family reunion in 1961. Milton said he could make arrangements for the Eisenhower brothers to vacation on an isolated 25,000-acre estate, "all timber and lakes," in Wisconsin (AWF/N). For background on Milton Eisenhower’s fishing in Wisconsin see no. 235. The President would lunch at the White House with brothers Milton and Edgar on November 30.

2 Milton would attend a White House dinner on November 30.

3 On Milton’s recent back injury see no. 1663. Although he was still in a cast, he reported, he was working at home and had been pain-free for four days. He expected to have the cast removed in about three weeks.

4 The four brothers would meet in mid-July for a two-week fishing vacation at Land O’ Lakes, Wisconsin (New York Times, July 17, 1960).
