Chapter 25: Farewells and Warnings

Dear Sherm: Unfortunately I never had a chance to inspect the little Bavarian Church that intrigued you so much when you visited there some years ago. Actually my effort for this year’s Christmas card was inspired by a picture post card that I picked up there.1

From someone visiting my office a few days ago, I heard that your book was to be published within the next month. If it is indeed true that your own work on it is finished, I can well imagine what a relief it is. I know you have had a tough job and I am sure it was a well worth while one. Naturally I am going to have a lively interest in reading it.2

I trust that you have enough New Hampshire snow this winter so that you and Rachel can indulge your passion for taking the slopes at breakneck speed. I am quite ready to follow your example in a trout stream, but I will be ------ if I am ever going to put on a ski that, in any event, looks to me more like a weapon of war than an item of sport.3

Give my love to Rachel and, of course, again a Happy New Year to you both. As ever

P.S.: I trust that the prognostications in your final paragraph will come true. At the very least, I am complimented that you believe so.4

1 Former Assistant to the President Adams had written on December 26 that the church shown in Eisenhower’s Christmas painting was in Ramsau, near Berchtesgaden. He had visited the site for more than an hour, he said, and it was one of the most enjoyable days he could remember. The President had often sent reproductions of his paintings as Christmas greetings during his Administration (see, for example, Galambos and van Ee, The Middle Way, nos. 1186 and 1617).

2 For background on Adams’s memoir see nos. 964 and 977. The book would be published as Firsthand Report: The Story of the Eisenhower Administration (New York, 1961).

3 Since his resignation in 1958 Adams had managed a ski resort in New Hampshire. On the President’s retirement later this month see no. 1633.

4 Adams had predicted that Eisenhower’s accomplishments in "this great world transition" would "loom larger with the years."
