Dear Howard: I am grateful for your New Year’s letter with the generous sentiments you so beautifully express.1
It goes without saying that so long as possible it would be a great comfort and convenience to Mamie and me for you to be in a position where we could confer with you on our health problems, which seem to recur more frequently than they did in our younger years. Whether or not we can make arrangements that would permit you to render this kind of service, of which we have been so appreciative, I do want you to know of my gratitude for your offer.2 It would be fine if I knew of some way of whisking you and Alice around to my favorite shooting, golfing and fishing places.3
Again, Happy New Year, and warm regard, As ever
