Part X: Ending an Era; August 1960 to January 1961
Chapter 25: Farewells and Warnings

Please assure all the signers and endorsers of the message that I received this morning that it is a bright spot in a day that is darkened by Laos, packing and snow that prohibits a journey to a golf course.1 Mamie and I send to all of you our very best wishes for a Happy New Year, a message that is in this instance endorsed by Ann Whitman, Jim Hagerty, Howard Snyder, Moaney and Delores.2

1 Mrs. Harris was the secretary at the Augusta National Golf Club. The New Year’s greeting that she, members of the staff at Augusta, and several of the Eisenhowers’ friends had sent on December 31 is in WHCF/PPF 31-A. The Eisenhowers would relocate to their Gettysburg home on January 20 (see no. 1633). On the worsening situation in Laos see no. 1752.

2 These were Presidential Secretary Ann Whitman, Press Secretary James C. Hagerty, and Presidential Physician Howard M. Snyder. Sergeant John A. Moaney and his wife Delores were the Eisenhowers’ personal aides.
