Chapter 1: The Mideast and the Eisenhower Doctrine

Dear Mr. Chief Justice--My special thanks for 'swearing me in,' twice in two days.1 Sincerely

1 United States Supreme Court Justice Warren (J.D. University of California 1914) had administered the oath of office to Eisenhower in a private White House ceremony on Sunday, January 20, and again in a public ceremony on January 21. To date, Eisenhower is the third U.S. President to have taken the private oath on Sunday; the two others were Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877, and Woodrow Wilson in 1917. Relatives, close friends, and high-ranking officials were among the nearly eighty persons who attended the private ceremony (New York Times, Jan. 13, 21, 22, 1957).

At noon on Monday, January 21, thousands watched the President take the oath of office. In his thirteen and one-half-minute Inaugural Address Eisenhower pledged U.S. aid to impoverished nations and honored the aspirations of those countries under foreign domination. He went on to call upon Americans to build "peace with justice in a world where moral law prevails" (Public Papers of the Presidents of the United States: Dwight D. Eisenhower, January 1, 1957 to December 31, 1957 [Washington, D.C., 1958], pp. 60 - 65). Following the ceremony, Eisenhower reviewed the inaugural parade and attended four inaugural balls (New York Times, Jan. 21, 22, 1957).
