Chapter 3: "I am astonished and chagrined"

Dear Winston: Thank you so much for your note of the twenty-fourth. I am tremendously pleased that you have agreed to the idea of an exhibition of your paintings in the United States.1 Without question the showing will be a great success, and will help to strengthen the close ties of friendship that exist between the peoples of our two countries.

Quite selfishly, I am even more delighted by your offer to give me one of your works.2 I have long cherished a desire to own an original Churchill--and I have never quite found the courage to ask you.

I understand that you invited me to write a bit of a foreword to the brochure that will be used in connection with the paintings.3 While I am probably little qualified for the task, it will be a great honor to make an attempt. As ever

1 For background on the project, proposed to the former British prime minister in a hand-delivered letter from Eisenhower, see no. 86. In his note Churchill had agreed to make thirty paintings available for the exhibit (AWF/I: Churchill).

2 Churchill had offered Eisenhower any painting in the selection as "a token of my continuing respect and affection." See also Telephone conversation, June 27, 1957, AWF/I: Churchill; and [Bernau] memorandum, July 1, 1957, Dulles Papers, Telephone Conversations.

3 Eisenhower had learned of Churchill's request in a telephone conversation the preceding day (Ann Whitman memorandum, June 27, 1957, AWF/I: Churchill; see also New York Times, Mar. 7, 1958). For developments see no. 414.
