Chapter 7: NATO and the Cold War

Dear Bud: Thank you for your note about the little talk I gave in Chicago. Incidentally, the reception there pleased Mrs. Eisenhower and me enormously; everyone seemed to go out of his way to make us feel welcome.1

Heidi is definitely an asset to life in the White House.2 She cavorts on the South Lawn at a great rate, with such important projects as chasing squirrels and investigating what might be under bushes. She is beautiful and well-behaved (occasionally she tends toward stubbornness but is then immediately apologetic about it). And she is extremely affectionate and seemingly happy. I am constantly indebted to you both for giving her to me and for arranging with Mr. Kellogg to train her.3

With warm regard, As ever

1 Summerfield's note is not in AWF. On January 20 Eisenhower had spoken at a dinner for the United Republican Fund of Illinois (see no. 539). The President listed the three objectives of the Republican party: security and a just peace; the American system of private enterprise; and doing "for people what needs to be done, but what they cannot do for themselves" (Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1958, pp. 114 - 15). On the reception see New York Times, January 21, 1958.

2 Summerfield had given Heidi, a Weimaraner puppy, to Eisenhower in August 1955 (see Galambos and van Ee, The Middle Way, no. 1545).

3 Marion Knight Kellogg (LL.B. Yale 1928), a leading Weimaraner enthusiast, had been recommended to Summerfield by the president of the National Weimaraner Club. In 1956 Kellogg had retired from law practice in Detroit to lecture on international law at the University of Virginia (Summerfield to Eisenhower, June 25, 1956, AWF/Gettysburg).
