The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower, Volume XVIII - The Presidency: Keeping the Peace
Part III: The Space Age Begins; October 1957 to January 1958
Chapter 7: NATO and the Cold War

Dear Arthur: I can't tell you how much I appreciate the heartwarming note, and the lovely roses, that you and Miriam sent to me this afternoon.1 Your thought of me helps greatly.

Arthur's death causes a great void in the Eisenhower family circle. He was our "big" brother--always dependable and always devoted.2

With warm regard, As ever

1 Postmaster General Summerfield's note is in AWF/A. His wife was the former Miriam W. Graim.

2 Arthur Bradford Eisenhower had died on January 26 at the age of 71. For background on his failing health see nos. 1, 4, and 439. On January 29 the President had attended the funeral services in Kansas City, Missouri (New York Times, Jan. 27, 30, 1958). For developments see no. 742.
