Part IV: Recession and Reform; February 1958 to May 1958
Chapter 8: "To engender confidence"

Dear Harold: I appreciate your taking the time to write me about the ridiculous question that confronted me at the press conference Wednesday, but it truly was not necessary. Of course I knew that you would not authorize such a badge, and I paid no further attention to the matter. I hope you won’t, either.1

Many thanks for keeping me informed as to developments. As you can imagine, I am watching the situation with great interest.2

With warm regard, As ever

1 Stassen was running for governor of Pennsylvania. At his March 26 news conference the President had been asked by a correspondent for the Los Angeles Times whether he had authorized badges circulating in Pennsylvania bearing Eisenhower's picture and the slogan, "I like Stassen for Governor." The President had responded: "I have always refused in advance of any primary or of any selection of Republican candidate for any office to intervene in any way, and I wouldn't want to be used either directly or indirectly in such a campaign" (Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1958, p. 242). Stassen had written to Eisenhower on March 27, 1958 (AWF/A) to assure him that there were "no such badges in circulation in Pennsylvania, and that I have at all times made it clear that I did not expect you to participate in the primary but would hope for your support after the primary is over."

2 Stassen would lose his bid for election. For background on his candidacy see no. 594">..http://www.eisenhowermemorial.org/presidential-papers/second-term/documents/629.cfm
