Chapter 9: "The problems inherent in this job"

Dear Ibby: My Naval Aide tells me that Swede is to be operated on tomorrow because of some difficulty with his lung. The second-hand report I have from the doctors is that they are completely optimistic about the outcome. Nevertheless, I know that this will be a period of tension and strain for you, and this note is simply to assure you that the thoughts and prayers of Mamie and myself will be with you.

When Swede comes out of the anesthetic and again feels like talking, tell him that we will be pulling for his quick and full recovery.1 Affectionately

1 Eisenhower had visited Hazlett in Bethesda Medical Center on April 4. For background on Hazlett's health see no. 622. On April 14 Hazlett would undergo surgery for the removal of his left lung. The President would receive a report on this same day (AWF/N, Hazlett Corr.), and Hazlett would remain in the hospital until July 3 (Eisenhower to Hazlett, July 3, 1958, ibid.). For developments see no. 906.
