Chapter 9: "The problems inherent in this job"

Dear Al: I have friends who play a good game of bridge. I have at least one friend who talks a good game of bridge. But there is a certain individual who has proved beyond all doubt his superiority in teaching the game of bridge.

The other day, to commemorate that memorable feat, I, by virtue of the authority vested in me, did confer on Pete Jones a permanent appointment. In all fairness you should have a copy for your archives.1

With warm regard, As ever

P.S. You will note that the "Secretary" joins me in confirming the legality of the appointment.2

1 Eisenhower had spent the evening of April 19 at Camp David with friends playing bridge and celebrating Jones's birthday (Ann Whitman memorandum, Apr. 18, 1958, AWF/AWD). In a thank-you letter to the head of the White House social office, Eisenhower would say the mock certificate was the "hit" of the birthday party (Eisenhower to Tolley, Apr. 23, 1958, WHCF/PPF 504). See also no. 122.

2 Mrs. Whitman noted that Eisenhower requested "a special commission made up for Pete Jones" (Ann Whitman memorandum, Apr. 19, 1958, AWF/AWD). The certificate, a copy of which is in the Gruenther Papers, conferred upon Jones a "DCL" (Doctor of Card Law) degree and appointed him "PROFESSOR and INSTRUCTOR of Al Gruenther and Others in the Laws, Rules, Techniques and Skullduggery of Bridge . . . during the pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being."
