Chapter 1: The Mideast and the Eisenhower Doctrine

Dear Dr. Hammer:1 After talking with Senator Smith, I have come to the conclusion that I should not accept your more than kind offer to present to me "Mamie of Shadow Isle."2 She is a valuable animal and, quite frankly, she would be a fine addition to my little herd of Angus. However, should I accept, I would find myself in an embarrassing position because of some other similar suggestions of gifts that I have had to decline.

I assure you that this negative answer in no way affects the very real sense of gratitude I have for your thoughtfulness--a fact that I am sure Senator Smith, when he next talks to you, will also emphasize.

With my thanks and best wishes, Sincerely

1 On January 18 petroleum magnate Hammer, who owned a stock farm in New Jersey, had offered Eisenhower an Aberdeen Angus heifer (AWF/Gettysburg). For background on Hammer and his efforts to provide Black Angus cattle for Eisenhower's Gettysburg farm see Galambos, NATO and the Campaign of 1952, no. 270.

2 Eisenhower had met with H. Alexander Smith (Rep., N.J.) on March 9. On the heifer see no. 15.
