Part V: Forcing the President's Hand; June 1958 to October 1958
Chapter 12: America Invades the Mideast

Dear Meade: It has been reported to me that the Hearst papers are planning to support Brown rather than Knowland in California.1 Isn’t there something that you can do about this? If you are not personally in close touch with the Hearst people, you might get hold of Jim Hagerty or Bill Robinson or someone of that kind to try to get them on the right track.2 As ever

1 For background on Senator William F. Knowland’s attempt to become governor of California see nos. 826 and 829. His Democratic opponent, Edmund Gerald ("Pat") Brown (LL.B. San Francisco Law School 1927), had served as attorney general of California (1951 - 1958) and as district attorney for the city and county of San Francisco (1943 -19 47). He had also been chairman of the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District since 1942. The Hearst Corporation newspapers had supported Eisenhower in the 1956 election; see Eisenhower to Hearst, October 11, 1956, WHCF/OF 138 New York.

2 Republican National Committee Chairman Alcorn would reply (Sept. 4, AWF/A) that he thought he had "taken some steps which will prove effective" and that he would make a personal report to Eisenhower later. Three of the four Hearst newspapers in California, however, would support Brown (Montgomery and Johnson, One Step from the White House, pp. 241, 252; Anderson, "The 1958 Election in California," p. 288; New York Times, Sept. 27, 1958). For developments see no. 842.
