Chapter 13: Quemoy and Matsu

Dear Jock: Of course I understand the reason why you could not disrupt the reorganization of one of your companies. I understand, though I have not been told directly, that temporary plans have been made which make an immediate opening unnecessary for the individual in question.1

At any rate, your willingness to help is just another in a long list of indebtednesses I owe to you.

I hope Betsey is feeling better.2 Give her my affectionate regard and to you, all the best as always. As ever

1 After Eisenhower had asked Whitney to find a job for a person whom we have been unable to identify, Whitney had written to apologize for his inability to find a "suitable opening" (Oct. 9, 1958, AWF/A). Whitney explained that the Great Northern Paper Company recently had completed an extensive reorganization that had brought many young people into key positions. "It was felt that the introduction of a person of stature would do real harm to the morale of the new set-up, and to try to do so on a purely non-functioning basis would be insulting and impossible," he wrote. Whitney assured Eisenhower that he and his friends would continue to work on the problem.
