Chapter 1: The Mideast and the Eisenhower Doctrine

Dear General Marshall:1 On February seventh Mamie and I have scheduled a Reception for the Judiciary and the Military, and I am enclosing with this note a formal invitation to you and Mrs. Marshall.2 I write to assure you that under no circumstances should you consider coming to Washington for the affair, much as we should like to see you. I am sure you know just how exhausting and frustrating such affairs can be. On the other hand, I did not want to overlook sending you an invitation, if there was the slightest chance you might like to come.3

With warm personal regard, As ever

1 For background on Eisenhower's long and cordial relationship with former Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense Marshall see Eisenhower Papers, vols. I - XVII.

2 We have been unable to locate a copy of the invitation in EM. Mrs. Marshall was the former Katherine Boyce Tupper Brown.

3 On January 30 (WHCF/OF 101-B-1) Marshall would thank the President for the "personal . . . invitation." He would, however, decline.
