Chapter 14: A "dreary election result"

Dear Charlie: Many thanks for your message of last evening.1 You are a man not only of decision but of action. Republican accomplishments of the past few days are little short of miraculous. Had we all started a few weeks earlier we could have steam rollered those people.2 In any event and at the very least we have the satisfying knowledge that we really got into harness and even if we do not secure all the results that we want on November fourth, we have got a good running start for the next campaign. I am more than grateful for all that you have done. Love to Jenny and all the best to yourself.3 As ever

1 For background on Richfield Oil Company President Jones’s activities in connection with the 1958 election campaign see nos. 826, 829, and 842. Jones had helped organize a successful fund-raising luncheon that Eisenhower attended on October 20 during his campaign trip to Los Angeles (Ann Whitman memorandum, [Nov. 2, 1958], AWF/AWD). We have been unable to locate any record of his message in AWF. Presidential Secretary Ann Whitman sent this note to Rodney Rood, Jones’s assistant at Richfield Oil, with a request that Rood relay it "to the elusive Mr. Jones--wherever he may be."

2 Late in October Republicans, led by Eisenhower and Vice-President Richard Nixon, had staged a vigorous last-minute effort to prevent a predicted Democratic victory in the November elections. For reports of speeches, rallies, and other activities see Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1958, pp. 786 - 94, 797 - 815, 819 - 26, and New York Times, October 30, 31, 1958.

3 Eisenhower’s greeting was to Jones’s wife, Genevieve. For developments see nos. 919 and 932.
