Chapter
14: A "dreary election result"

Dear Charlie: Many thanks for your message of last evening.1 You are a man not only of decision but of action. Republican accomplishments of the past few days are little short of miraculous. Had we all started a few weeks earlier we could have steam rollered those people.2 In any event and at the very least we have the satisfying knowledge that we really got into harness and even if we do not secure all the results that we want on November fourth, we have got a good running start for the next campaign. I am more than grateful for all that you have done. Love to Jenny and all the best to yourself.3 As ever
