Chapter 14: A "dreary election result"

Dear Cliff: Before another moment passes I want to express my deep gratitude for all you have done in the last few weeks for the cause in which we both deeply believe.1 I know you have almost single-handedly raised the funds that made the national telecasts possible.2 Whatever their impact and whatever the results on November fourth, I have the satisfaction, as I hope you have, of knowing no effort has been spared. Also, I truly believe we have right now a good running start for the next campaign.

Thank you for everything, most particularly for your friendship.3 With warm regard

1 For background on the role played by Eisenhower’s friend Roberts in the 1958 elections see nos. 829 and 842; see also papers in AWF/N, Roberts Corr.

2 Eisenhower had delivered nationally televised speeches on October 22, 27, and 31; in addition, he had participated in a televised panel discussion, sponsored by the Republican National Committee, with a group of Republican women in San Francisco, California, on October 21. See New York Times, October 22, 28, and November 1, 1958; see also Public Papers of the Presidents: Eisenhower, 1958, pp. 765 - 74, 780 - 94, 802 - 8, 819 - 26.

3 Roberts would reply (Nov. 3, AWF/N) that he had "mixed emotions" about Eisenhower’s telegram; while he was "proud" to have received it, he felt guilty that he had not already written to thank the President for having made "those three truly great speeches." He also suggested that they should meet to discuss ways to make the Republican party stronger. For developments see nos. 926, 945, and 963.
