Chapter 14: A "dreary election result"

Dear Earl: I am afraid I was not too explicit about my invitation to you and Kathryn to stay at the White House when you come to Washington to help Edgar celebrate his 70th birthday. Mamie and I would love to have you stay at the White House from whatever time you arrive, up to and including the evening of the nineteenth.1 We have, however, a large formal dinner for the President of Argentina on the twentieth and the house will be full.2

Incidentally, if you and Kathryn would like to attend such a formal affair, I wish you would let me know. It’s a white tie occasion, and when I asked Edgar about it, he refused enthusiastically. However, if you and Kathryn have any interest, just let me know and the Social Secretary will make all the arrangements.3

Incidentally, I have asked Edgar and Lucy to stay at the White House time and again and they have always refused; they prefer the greater freedom of a hotel such as the Statler.

In other words, just tell us what you want to do and we will proceed accordingly.4

With all the best to the two of you for a fine New Year, and affectionate regard, As ever

1 For background see no. 978. On December 23 Earl had written that he and his wife would stay at the White House unless the President had other guests.

2 Arturo Frondizi, the first Argentine President to visit the United States while in office, would be a guest at the White House January 20 - 22 (New York Times, Jan. 22, 23, 24, 1959).

3 In his January 6 reply Earl would decline the invitation to the reception, adding that no one attended "a white tie affair except under duress."

4 Earl would say he had decided to stay at the Statler, even though he doubted that he would be able to "stand Ed for three days." All correspondence is in AWF/N.

The Eisenhower brothers and their families would celebrate Edgar's birthday at the White House the evening of January 19 (New York Times, Jan. 20, 1959).
